Quick verdict
Choose FOLD if: you want a $9 flat service fee (not Rinse’s $14.95), 24–48 hour standard turnaround (not Rinse’s typical 3–5 days), $250 cash damage protection (not $50 store credit), and a 25-year LA dry-cleaning operator behind your laundry.
Choose Rinse if: you specifically want a multi-city brand (they operate in SF, NY, DC, Boston, Chicago in addition to LA) and the brand recognition matters more than the per-pickup economics.
What you actually pay per pickup
If you do weekly pickup, that’s ~$310/year saved on service fees alone — before counting the time saved on Rinse’s longer turnaround. Pricing as of May 2026; verify current rates with each company before booking.

Where FOLD wins
1. Service fee — $9 vs $14.95
Rinse’s $14.95 service fee per pickup is the highest in the LA market. FOLD’s is $9 flat. On a typical 25 lb weekly pickup, that’s a $5.95 difference per week, or ~$310 per year — before counting any other variable. For weekly customers, this single line item can be enough to switch.
2. Turnaround — 24–48 hours vs 3–5 days
Rinse’s standard delivery window is 3–5 days; same-day rush is rare in LA. FOLD’s standard is 24–48 hours, with a guaranteed 24-hour SLA available as a $20 add-on (free for Concierge Members). For families with kids’ school clothes, gym wear, or hospitality use cases (Airbnb, salons), this is the difference between “laundry is one less thing” and “laundry is a project that takes a week.”
3. Owned facility — not subcontracted
Rinse operates a marketplace model: they pick up your laundry and route it to a local laundromat partner who actually washes it. Quality varies by which partner gets your bag that week. FOLD operates a 25-year-old LA dry-cleaning facility (University Laundry Services LLC). Your bag goes through our equipment, sorted by our staff, on our schedule. Quality is structurally tighter on a single-operator facility with 25 years of process.
4. Damage protection — cash refund, not store credit
If we damage a $400 silk dress, FOLD cuts you a check for up to $250 and apologizes. Rinse, like most app-based laundry pickup services, caps damage claims at $50 store credit (an industry standard from 1990s commercial-laundry contracts that hasn’t kept pace with what people actually pay for clothes). For premium-fabric customers and anyone with kids’ uniforms, this matters more than the per-pound rate.
5. LA pedigree — not a venture-funded app
Rinse is a venture-funded multi-city company (~$26M raised) built as an app first; the laundry-handling expertise is acquired via partnerships. FOLD is operated by University Laundry Services LLC, an LA dry-cleaning business that has been quietly handling laundry since 2001. Twenty-five years of laundry-handling experience is what prevents 95% of damage claims from happening in the first place.
6. No card on file required
Rinse requires you to put a card on file at signup before they’ll accept your bag. FOLD doesn’t. We charge after pickup once we’ve weighed your bag and you’ve confirmed the total. Means there’s no upfront commitment to evaluate quality on your first pickup.
Where Rinse might win for you
If you live in multiple cities (e.g., split time between LA and NY) and want one app for both, Rinse’s multi-city footprint is real value. They’re also a longer-tenured app brand — if app polish is a tiebreaker, they win. And if you don’t care about turnaround speed (e.g., you have enough wardrobe rotation that 4-day delivery is fine), the per-pound math is similar.
Rinse’s “Rinse Repeat” subscription is also a legitimate offering for customers who want predictable monthly billing — though FOLD’s Concierge Member program ($2.25/lb + free 24h SLA + no service fees) typically nets out cheaper for weekly customers, with no monthly minimum.
Why we wrote this comparison
We get asked “why FOLD over Rinse” about twice a week. Both companies are real and operating. We think FOLD wins on the variables that compound — transparent service fees ($5.95/week saved adds up), turnaround speed (24–48h vs 3–5 days), damage protection (real cost when it matters), owned facility (quality control), and 25-year LA pedigree. But the answer depends on what you weight. This page is here so you can decide on real numbers.

FAQ
Is FOLD owned by the same company as Rinse?
No. FOLD is operated by University Laundry Services LLC, a 25-year LA dry-cleaning business based at 16851 Victory Blvd in Van Nuys. Rinse, Inc. is a separate venture-funded multi-city company we have no affiliation with.
Can I switch to FOLD if I’m currently using Rinse?
Yes — there’s no contract on either side, so switching is just booking your next pickup with us. Your first FOLD pickup is 50% off, plus we’ll knock $20 off if you show our driver your last Rinse receipt at the door (proves you’re a switcher). Switch from Rinse here.
Why is Rinse’s service fee so much higher?
Rinse operates a marketplace model — they pick up and dispatch to partner laundromats, which adds a layer of operational overhead (dispatch, partner reconciliation, app infrastructure, multi-city support) that has to be priced into the service fee. FOLD owns the facility, so we don’t pay a partner — we just charge what it costs us to send a driver and process the bag.
What if my Rinse pickup is delayed and I have a deadline?
Common Rinse complaint, especially around holidays. FOLD offers a guaranteed 24-hour SLA as a $20 add-on (free for Concierge Members) — we contractually guarantee delivery within 24 hours from pickup, refunded if we miss. Rinse doesn’t advertise an equivalent SLA at the per-pickup level.
What about damage — what’s actually covered?
FOLD: cash refund up to $250 per item or $500 per order, paid via Stripe credit or check within 48 hours of valid claim. Rinse: $50 store credit cap per item, per most industry-standard laundry contracts. FOLD’s full damage policy here; check Rinse’s current terms directly with them.
Do both companies serve the same parts of LA?
FOLD serves the entire LA Westside, San Fernando Valley, South Bay (Manhattan/Hermosa/Redondo Beach + El Segundo + Playa Vista), Pasadena/East LA, Hollywood, and Mid-City. Rinse serves most of LA proper but has historically had less reliable coverage in parts of the Valley. See FOLD’s full service area.
